BY DAYS MY LIMBS, BY NIGHT MY MIND | 2010

by day my limbs, by night my mind * is a collaborative project between Sally Morfill and Sylvie Vandenhoucke. A mutual interest in drawing and the myriorama or ‘Endless Landscape’ with its many narrative variations provided the starting point for remote discussion, suggesting the development of a kit of components to bring together on site. There is a mutual risk taking; an attempt at dialogue; play; an as yet unknown resolution. Five Years provides the first moment of exposure and one proposed configuration of elements chosen from the kit. Sally Morfill and Sylvie Vandenhoucke met through a research project initiated by Manchester Metropolitan University, UK investigating the impact of the collaborative process on artists’ individual practices.

Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed

The dear repose for limbs with travel tired;

But then begins a journey in my head

To work my mind, when body’s work’s expir’d:

For then my thoughts - from far where I abide –

Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,

And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,

Looking on darkness which the blind do see:

Save that my soul’s imaginary sight

Presents thy shadow to my sightless view,

Which, like a jewel hung in ghastly night,

Makes black night beauteous and her old face new.

Lo! thus, by day my limbs, by night my mind,

For thee, and for myself no quiet find.
